A 24-year-old Indian student was working as a food delivery partner in Canada. He was killed during a deadly carjacking, during which he was violently assaulted by unknown suspects.
The incident occurred around 2:10 am on July 9 at Britannia and Creditview roads in Mississauga, CTV News reported.
“Investigators believe there are multiple suspects involved and that the food order was made as a means to lure the driver to this specific area.”
Inspector Phil King of the Peel Regional Police Homicide Bureau said investigators obtained an audio recording of the pizza order placed before the attack.
After Nath arrived, he was “violently assaulted” and seriously injured by a suspect who stole his vehicle and fled the scene, police said.
Several witnesses rushed to his aid and called for help. Nath was taken to a trauma center, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on July 14.
Siddhartha Nath, Consul General of India in Toronto, called Nath’s death a “heartbreaking loss” and expressed his condolences to family, friends and the wider community, CBC reported.
He said the consulate general had contacted the family after his death.
“It was encouraging for me to see how the community responded, coming together both online and physically to support the family in this time of grief,” said the Consul General.
“Of course, nothing can make up for the loss, but it will be a comfort to the bereaved family, and it is also a sign of the spirit of the community because it is at times like this that spirit, solidarity and a sense of empathy are tested.”
The consul general said he hopes those responsible are brought to justice.
Inspector King stated that although the investigation is in its early stages, police believe that Nath was an innocent victim.
According to King’s statement, Nath’s vehicle was discovered abandoned in the area of Old Creditview and Old Derry roads, less than three miles from the crime scene.
“The working theory is that there may have been extensive injuries (at Nath) that may not have been anticipated and may have caused (the suspects) to dispose of the vehicle prematurely,” he said.
Since then, the vehicle has been forensically examined and “various” pieces of evidence have been recovered, King added.
Police say there is no known connection between Nath and his attackers.
“I would like to remind those involved that regardless of your level of involvement, you are complicit in the murder of Gurvinder Nath and will be arrested and charged accordingly,” King said.
Nath’s body will be flown to India on July 27 with the assistance of the Indian Consulate General in Toronto, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported.
CTV News Toronto spoke to Nath’s family and friends last week, who mentioned that he was a Brampton resident enjoying his summer vacation before returning to complete his last semester of business school.
“He was innocent; he was just delivering pizza [when] random people hit him on the head,” said Nath’s cousin, Balram Krishan.
Nath came to Canada from India in July 2021 with aspirations to start his own business.
According to CBC, more than 200 people attended a candlelight vigil on Saturday for Nath in Mississauga.
During the vigil, speakers said Nath had brought his family’s hopes to Canada, and now his family is grieving the loss of one of their three children.

“You come to Canada with a dream. You start your life. But these people stole your dream.” Bobby Sidhu, a friend of a relative of Nath’s, said.
Sidhu said, “Canada was known for peace. And I hope that in our country, that senseless and ruthless crime comes to an end. Everyone could relate to Gurvinder. I think that’s why the community has come together.”
