The dramatic climax of the 2021 Halloween attack was revealed as the Tokyo District Court’s Tachikawa branch spoke through a spokeswoman to relay the outcome.

According to reports from Jiji Press and other local media, Kyota Hattori, aged 26, was found guilty of stabbing a male passenger in his 70s and attempting to kill 12 others by igniting a fire on the train.

Reportedly, Mr. Hattori informed investigators of his desire to take lives and receive the death penalty. He also admitted to spreading lighter fluid inside the train.

As the sun sets on this chapter, Japan’s reputation for safety is once again questioned by the sporadic outbursts of violence that disrupt its tranquility.
