54 Percent of Americans Believe Joe Biden, 81, Is No Longer Competent to ‘Do the Job of President’: Poll

President Biden is trailing former President Donald Trump in the 2024 race, according to a new poll, which also shows growing concern among voters about the Democratic incumbent’s capabilities.

Trump, 77, leads Biden, 80, 44% to 42% in a head-to-head election matchup, the Yahoo News/YouGov poll released Wednesday shows.

The poll also found that 54% say Biden, who turns 81 next week, is no longer “competent to do the job of president,” up from 49% in February.

Less than a third of respondents, 31%, believe the president remains competent, the survey shows, a decline of four percentage points from February.

Concerns about Biden’s “health and mental acuity” have also increased, with 64% saying they are somewhat or very concerned about the issue.

In June 2020, before Biden took office, less than half of Americans (48%) said they had the same level of concern about the candidate’s health and mental state.

While Trump, the frontrunner in the 2024 Republican primary, is only three and a half years younger than Biden, 38% say he is “fit to be president,” while only 24% say the same about Biden.

When voters were asked how big their concern was about Biden’s age, 55% said it was a big problem, and a whopping 80% said it was at least a small problem.

Americans are also much more aware of the president’s verbal and physical lapses than his legislative accomplishments, the survey found.

More voters have heard “a lot” about Biden “physically stumbling at public events” (47%); making “verbal gaffes” (41%) and “falling asleep at public events” (33%) than when Congress passes the Infrastructure Jobs and Investment Act (20%) or Medicare is allowed to negotiate lower prices of prescription drugs under the so-called Inflation Reduction Act (23%).

The poll comes the same week that David Axelrod, a top adviser to former President Barack Obama, warned that Biden’s “age issue” was consistent in polls and was “the one thing” his campaign couldn’t reverse. .

“The only worrying number in the poll, and in the CNN poll that followed the New York Times poll, had to do with age, and that is something that cannot be reversed, no matter how effective Joe Biden is behind of the scenes. In front of the camera, what he’s projecting is causing people concern, and that’s concerning,” Axelrod said during an appearance on CNN on Sunday.

Axelrod was referring to a surprising New York Times/Siena College poll released last week that showed 71% of voters were concerned about Biden’s age, while only 39% of voters thought Trump was too old. for the position.

The poll also showed Biden lost five key battleground states to Trump in a 2024 election showdown.
