A 16-year-old student is killed in a shooting at a Louisiana high school football game

A student was killed and another victim was injured when shots were fired during a high school football game in Louisiana.

The shooting broke out Friday during halftime near the crowd stands at the Port Allen High School football field, according to the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Two people were shot: a 16-year-old student and a 28-year-old woman.

A medical helicopter landed in the field and took the two victims to the hospital, where the teenager was pronounced dead.

The woman was treated for non-life-threatening arm injuries.

Police have not made any arrests and have no leads about the violence.

“We don’t know what led up to the event and we still don’t know if it was a targeted shooting or a random shooting,” said Sgt. Landon Groger said. “We want to take our time and cover this from all angles.”

According to the West Baton Rouge School Board, the mysterious shooting occurred despite increased security in place for the school’s second game of the season.

The game against nearby Brusly High School was called because of a 13-13 tie.

Port Allen officials announced they would be tightening security during the school day in the wake of the tragedy.

“We have programs going on in our schools that teach students ways to resolve disputes with their peers. We will redouble those efforts and work with the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office and others in the coming months to teach our students that violence destroys the lives of many people,” Superintendent Chandler Smith said in a statement to parents. .

“Our prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy. In times like these, our entire community is grieving. By loving and supporting each other, we will get through this.”

The tragedy comes just a week after a 16-year-old boy was killed and three others were wounded during a shooting at an Oklahoma high school football game.

Police believe weapons were drawn after an argument broke out between at least two men in the stands.

Shocking video shows the moment gunfire erupted, sending players and spectators running to safety.
