A 55-year-old man named Ranjith Varma, originally from India, died while attempting a single-day hike through the Grand Canyon in Arizona, United States.
He became unresponsive while walking with six other people along the North Kaibab Trail on the northern edge of the national park.
The group’s goal was to hike from the South Rim to the North Rim in a single day, said Joelle Baird, Grand Canyon Park spokesperson.

In response, search and rescue personnel quickly mobilized by helicopter. However, they faced complications due to the steep and rocky terrain, which made it difficult to land the plane completely.
Despite his best efforts, Varma could not be resuscitated, KSL-TV reported.
After his death, Varma’s body was taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff. The office is now investigating the incident in collaboration with the National Park Service, as reported by news channel KTAR.
Although the precise cause of Varma’s death has not been determined, it is suspected that heat was a major factor. Joelle Baird mentioned that temperatures that particular Saturday exceeded 37.7°C inside the canyon.
