A Fond Farewell to Bodypainting Day: Reflections on the New York Festival of Arts and Nudity

After years of honoring the harmonious fusion of narcissism and artistic expression, Bodypainting Day in New York City bids a tearful farewell. The city’s enthusiasm for artistic freedom and the celebration of the human form is demonstrated through this special annual event. After more than ten years, Bodypainting Day will be the last time artists have turned nude bodies into art.

In Manhattan’s Union Square, organizer Andy Golub anticipates more than 50 people will be painted over the course of four hours. Golub made the decision to end the event this year because it’s time to “move on and clear that plate.” He said he wants to identify strategies to unite and inspire people, including a new event next spring.

After the body painting on Sunday, July 23, 2023, the painters and models will march through Greenwich Village, take a photo in Washington Square Park, ride a double-decker bus across the Manhattan Bridge, and end the day with a party in Brooklyn, according to Golub.

The annual body painting show was founded by Golub, an artist and free speech activist who has been painting nude models since 2007, to emphasize that the use of nudity for artistic expression is allowed in New York City.

The police are still making an effort to stop the event despite this. Golub claimed that in 2011, he and two models were jailed for 24 hours after being arrested, but the charges were dismissed after it was found they were not breaking any laws.

Golub stated, “You will find many people who have been positively impacted. Most artists, but there are also models, have the feeling that their skin is breaking out. And it has been nothing short of a truly uplifting experience to truly celebrate freedom.”

The event has previously occurred in Times Square, Columbus Circle, and other well-known locations throughout the city. The age requirement for all participants, models and painters is 18 years old, but the event is no longer accepting registrations.
