A long trip! Book about tomatoes due in 1974 returns to Scottish library in 2023

We’ve all had experiences holding on to that book that we knew needed to be returned to the library years ago but was never returned. Since libraries are quite used to people leaving with their books, some librarians were surprised when they finally returned a delayed book after almost half a century and it was still in pristine condition.

The instruction manual, entitled “Tomatoes for Everyone”, written by Frank W. Allerton, was borrowed on January 21, 1974. This book, which bears the seal of the former Orkney County Library, offers advice on growing of tomatoes and have been borrowed a total of eight times before, with the first loan dating back to 1969.

According to Orkney Library, Scotland’s oldest public library, the book was returned in excellent condition on Friday. It was stored in a box that had been moved from home several times.

Similar versions of the book are currently selling on Amazon for £79, making this particular copy quite valuable.

Fortunately for the reader, the library does not impose late fees, so they were able to avoid racking up a substantial fine. In a tweet, the library wrote: “We just returned a library book that was due in 1974, how’s your day going?”

They continued: “We don’t charge overdue fees, so the fine for this was exactly £0.00. But if we charged just 1p a day, the fine would have been *check calculations* £181.55. When it was first made late, Ted Heath was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. “Richard Nixon was the president of the United States.”
