Emma Tahir, a National Grid trainee, claims that Colin Higgins sent her offensive emails at work and demanded that she remove her sweatshirt during a site visit. After her boss was found to have sexually harassed her, a National Grid trainee was awarded approximately £360,000 in a lawsuit. Emma Tahir testified in Hull court that Colin Higgins “repeatedly” demanded that she remove her sweater, physically invaded her and wanted her to “marry him”. Ms Tahir, a trainee project supervisor, described how Higgins, a mentor of hers who is reportedly in his fifties, inundated her with text messages and emails.
In addition to telling her that she was his “favorite” and that he “liked her”, he also sent her an email with the message “Marry me”. The two would “get along” if he was younger, she further questioned. Higgins retained his position after an internal review of his behavior. Tahir told the hearing that Higgins ordered her to remove her hoodie on a visit to a National Grid facility in West Yorkshire shortly after she started working there. However, Ms. Tahir filed a lawsuit against National Grid in 2021 alleging sexual harassment, victimization, and constructive wrongful termination. The court awarded the apprentice £357,000. She argued that her interaction with management harmed her “professional career.”
Judge Joanna Wade stated that the award includes £40,000 for emotional loss and £10,000 for psychiatric injury. National Grid engaged Ms Tahir, a solicitor with a degree from the University of Leeds, on a construction development scheme for a salary of £30,000. Last year National Grid generated £18.26 billion in sales and employed just under 30,000 staff. To establish a ‘national grid’ connecting the UK’s most efficient power stations with consumers, Lord Weir founded the company in 1925.
