Poignant photos show the first moments a 4-year-old Israeli-American girl was reunited with her relatives after spending nearly 50 days as a Hamas hostage.
Abigail Edan, who marked four years in captivity on Nov. 24, was released Sunday night into the arms of her aunt and grandmother at Hatzerim Air Force Base.
She was one of 17 hostages returned Sunday and the first U.S. citizen freed under a fragile temporary ceasefire agreement between Israel and the terrorist group.
A photo of the meeting posted Monday on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official X account shows the young woman wrapped in a blue and white blanket (the colors of Israel’s flag) while her smiling aunt cradles her.
More photos released by Schneider Children’s Medical Center show young Abigail smiling surrounded by her family, including her aunt Liron, uncle Zuli and grandparents Eitan and Shlomit.

In one image, Abigail, smiling from ear to ear, sits on her aunt’s lap and holds her hand while wearing a pink sweatshirt that says “Love Smile Be” in the shape of a heart.
Abigail became a world-renowned figure during her captivity, symbolizing Hamas’ depravity for endangering such a small, innocent girl.
Hamas killed both of Abigail’s parents in front of her and her two older brothers at their home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza on October 7. Her great-aunt Liz Hirsch Naftali told NBC that the children’s father was shot and killed while he held Abigal in her arms. , falling on top of her as she died.
