Adil Hussain was born on October 5, 1963 in Goalpara, Assam in an Assamese Muslim family. His father was a teacher. Adil was the youngest of seven brothers. He completed philosophy from B. Boroah College, Guwahati. He studied at the National School of Drama from 1990 to 1993. He also studied at The Drama Studio, London, on a Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship.

Career
After completing the drama course at the National School of Drama and the Drama Studio, London, Hussain returned to Assam and started working at the Hengul Theatre. He worked there for three years and then moved back to Delhi. He trained under Khalid Tyabji and Swapan Bose at Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry. He then also trained under Dilip Shankar in Delhi.
Hussain started acting by working in Assamese films like Sutrapaat, Xongkolpo, Pita Putra, Bhai Bhai, etc. In 2004, Hussain made his debut in Bengali cinema with Iti Srikanta, he played the lead role of Srikanta in this drama film. Meanwhile, he also played the lead role in a television series called Jasoos Vijay that aired in 2002-2003.
He rose to fame for the Bollywood film Kaminey, starring Shahid Kapoor and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. Some of the Bollywood movies of him are Agent Vinod, English Vinglish, Bombay, Lootera, Ishqiya, The XPose, Force 2, Commando 2, etc.
