‘Adults who can’t be parents’: Georgia restaurant charges $50 extra for ‘loud’ family

The innocent joy of children can sometimes result in a delightful interruption, testing the patience of other diners and challenging the balance between enjoyment and discomfort.

During a recent visit to the Toccoa Riverside restaurant in Georgia, Lyndsey Landmann, her family and friends faced an unexpected $50 charge on their bill. The reason? The restaurant cited her children as “too loud.”

According to a USA Today report, Lyndsey, her husband Kyle, and their two children were accompanied by four other families, making a total of 11 children at their table.

Upon noticing the restaurant’s “adult surcharge” warning on the menu, Lyndsey Landmann initially believed it was a joke, as she later shared with the outlet.

The Blue Ridge restaurant in Georgia has included several footnotes on its food menu, covering issues of etiquette and payment.

Among them, there are conventional reminders like “show respect to our staff,” but one note in particular that immediately caught Lyndsey’s attention read:

“Adult surcharge: For adults who cannot be parents.” “I remember thinking, ‘There’s no way this is real.'” she told Hoy.

The large gathering enjoyed the food, and Lyndsey noted that the children, who ranged in age from 3 to 8, were “behaving very well.”

“I even commented halfway through the meal, ‘I can’t believe how well behaved they are.'”

Lyndsey said the restaurant’s owner, Tim Richter, came up to her table after dessert.

At first, she thought he would come to congratulate the families. However, Richter surprised them by explaining the “adult surcharge” and informed them of a $50 fee for excessive noise and children’s outdoor activities. Lyndsey described the encounter as “alarming”.

“I thought, ‘They were quiet the whole time.’ She confronted us and told us we belonged to Burger King and not his restaurant.” she said.

“We asked to speak to the owner and he said he was the owner. I looked around the restaurant and everyone was frozen, watching the show I was putting on. I was screaming.”

A snapshot of the restaurant’s parental fee went viral on Reddit after being shared earlier this week.

Numerous commenters expressed their reluctance to dine at an establishment that has such a policy. Some noted that the menu did not specify the exact amount of the “adult surcharge.”

While the restaurant did not respond to people’s questions, an employee told Today by phone, “We’re not going to comment on a policy we’ve had for years. We just want to live in the woods and cook.” “
