The 79-year-old pilot of the plane reportedly died unconscious when the woman had to take steps to regain control. The horrific incident occurred during the final leg of the trip from Westchester, New York, to Martha’s Vineyard. Only two people were reportedly aboard the 2006 Piper Meridian at the time of the tragedy.
The passenger and pilot are both from Connecticut, but their identities have been withheld. The passenger is believed to have landed the plane in a crash area at 3:15 p.m.
The region around the island’s airport runway was subjected to a “hard landing”. The impact was so strong that the left wing of the aircraft broke in half. Images of the crash site have begun circulating on Twitter.
Footage shows police officers assessing the situation as several cars line up to help. The people on board are said to have survived the crash.
Multiple social media users were caught up in video from the crash site, but some ended up applauding the woman’s efforts.
The passengers escaped unharmed.
According to the New York Post, the 79-year-old pilot was airlifted to a Boston hospital in critical condition. However, it is not clear if the health problem was due to the plane crash or a medical emergency that he experienced only seconds before the catastrophe.
Meanwhile, the passenger was uninjured, according to reports. She was taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for a medical examination before being released. It is not clear if the pilot’s condition was caused by the medical crisis or the disaster.
According to state police, the couple flew from Westchester, New York, to Martha’s Vineyard. They were the only two passengers on the plane.
Three authorities are now investigating the crash: the state police, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board. In addition, no information has been released about the medical episode that caused the pilot to faint and lose control.
The aircraft was dismantled and transported to a secure area at the airport, and the crash scene was cleaned up, according to the report. The incident occurred nearly 24 years after a Piper accident off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard killed John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn and his sister Lauren Bessette.
