Amar Upadhyay was born on August 1, 1976 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. When he was a child, his family moved to Mumbai and he grew up in Malad, Mumbai. He currently resides in Versova, Mumbai.
Upadhyay studied at Dhanamal High School, Kandivali West, Mumbai. He was always a great learner and went on to study his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Bombay Institute of Technology Worli, Mumbai. He began modeling during university studies.

Career
Amar used to model for various magazines but was initially discovered for his appearance in Stardust magazine in 1994. This led to his first role in the series called Dekh Bhai Dekh and proved to be a springboard for his acting career. His initial show was followed by television serials like Arzoo, Suhana Safar, Tulsi and Mehndi Tere Naam Ki. Amar’s breakthrough came in the show Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi in 2002, where he played the male lead role of Mihir.
After taking a break for almost 2 years, Upadhyay returned to the television screen with the show called Chand Ke Paar Chalo and also contributed to other shows called Saath Nibhana Sathiya and Ek Dewaana Tha.
Upadhyay also participated in the reality television show Big Boss season 5 in 2011. He has also been a part of several Bollywood films like Dhoondte Reh Jaoge, Dahsaht, Censor, Dhund: The Fog, Jodi Kya Banayi Wah Wah Ramji, LOC Kargil, etc
