On Wednesday, Amazon announced that its global website ranking system and competitor analysis tool “Alexa.com”, which has been in operation for 25 years, will be shut down.
Alexa.com is a subsidiary of Amazon known for its global ranking system, which lists the most popular online businesses based on web traffic statistics from its partners. In addition to the worldwide website ranking system, Alexa.com paid subscriptions include a full suite of SEO and competitive analysis tools.
According to a new support document, Amazon will shut down the Alexa.com platform in May 2022, and no new monthly statistics will be provided after that.
“Alexa Internet was founded twenty-five years ago. We made the painful decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022, after two decades of helping you locate, reach, and convert your digital audience. Thank you for entrusting us with your content research, competitor analysis, keyword research and other needs,” according to the firm.
Customers with existing subscriptions will continue to have access to Amazon data and SEO tools even if Amazon no longer offers new subscriptions.
Existing subscriptions will be active until May 1, 2022 UTC, after which access will be removed. Similarly, on December 8, 2022, Amazon APIs will be deprecated.
Alexa.com’s organic traffic has been steadily declining, according to data from Semrush, an online visibility management SaaS platform, so it’s plausible Amazon is shutting down the site due to a sizable drop in popularity.
