You may be able to watch Amazon Prime episodes on an Amazon TV in the near future. Hurrah! Amazon has been working on Amazon-branded TVs for the past two years, according to a recent Insider report.
Two versions are in the works: one built by a third party, TCL, which will have Amazon branding and an interface with Alexa, and another made by Amazon. And a second TV, which Amazon engineers are said to be working on in-house.
The first one could be released in early October. There is no cost information yet, but they are expected to be between 55 and 75 inches long. It’s easy to see why the concept of watching Amazon TV series on an Amazon device via an Amazon Prime subscription appeals to Amazon. Nothing pleases Amazon more than that sweet, beautiful vertical integration, as evidenced by its (potentially antitrust-violating) Amazon Basics line.
Also, just like AmazonBasics products are highlighted on the website, Prime movies and series can be featured prominently on an Amazon TV. Although Apple doesn’t have a TV, the AppleTV interface puts Apple TV+, as well as Apple Music and other Apple media options, right at the top of the menu.
It’s obvious why Amazon wants a TV. Should you buy it even if it is a cheap and beautiful product? This is the firm that turned Ring home security devices into a police monitoring network. It collects massive amounts of information about users in order to sell us as many items as possible. Alexa is known to listen in on conversations. Amazon already sells a Fire TV stick, TV adapter, and remote that acts as a streaming app platform powered by Amazon. It’s unclear if a real Amazon TV would have the same user interface. It has also ventured into the world of branded televisions. In December 2020, it launched AmazonBasics TV, though it was only available in India. The device was priced at around $410.
However, it seems that the television project has not gone well. Ben Bergman, an Insider co-reporter on the story, tweeted, “The launch has been plagued with logistical hurdles.”
Will Amazon TV be available in time for the holidays? Given how much money is so important to Amazon and Jeff Bezos, that’s probably a fair assumption.
