Apple announces new self-service repair program

Apple has introduced the ‘Self-Service Repair’ service, which allows consumers to perform their own repairs using a new online store for parts and tools.

Self Service Repair will be available in the US early next year for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lines, with Mac computers with M1 CPUs soon to follow. It will also be available in other countries during 2022.

In a statement, Apple COO Jeff Williams stated, “Creating broader access to genuine Apple components gives our customers even more options if a repair is needed.”

Customers become part of a network of more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) and 2,800 independent repair providers who have access to these components, tools, and manuals.

The first phase of the program will focus on the most frequently repaired components, such as the iPhone’s screen, battery and camera. Additional repair capabilities will be available late next year.

It is critical that a customer first read the Repair Manual to verify that a repair can be performed safely. The consumer will then use Apple’s online self-service repair store to order genuine Apple parts and tools.

Customers who return their used parts for recycling after repair will earn a credit toward their purchase.

More than 200 different parts and tools will be available in the new store, allowing customers to complete the most common iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 repairs.
