Apple urges iPhone and iPad users to update their devices

Apple on Wednesday advised its users to update their devices immediately to fix security flaws. The updates were made available to customers after finding vulnerabilities that hackers could “actively exploit.”

The company made the software updates available on Tuesday, adding a rare notice that suggests it is a serious threat.

Apple credited anonymous researchers for pointing out the vulnerability, but provided few details about the nature of the threat.

The company said one of the vulnerabilities affects the “kernel” – the powerhouse of Apple’s iOS operating system – while two others affect WebKit, the web browsing engine used by Safari and other applications.

The update is for multiple generations of devices, starting with the iPhone 6.
