An Oregon bat named William ShakespEAR won a nationwide beauty contest for winged mamlukes.
The female Townsend’s long-eared bat won the annual contest hosted by the federal Bureau of Land Management, part of the Department of the Interior, which oversees one in 10 acres of land in the U.S., including vast sections of the western states , Oregon Public Broadcasting reported. .
The prize-winning creature, a native of Butte Falls in Jackson County, was chosen as the winner by social media users, who voted on photographs of different bat species taken on public lands across the country.
It was photographed by BLM wildlife technician Emma Busk in Jackson County, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Townsend’s long-eared bats are known for their large ears, which measure about half the length of their body, making the animal’s surname “ShakespEAR” appropriate.

The contest, which began on October 24 and ended, appropriately, on Halloween, is being held at the same time as International Bat Week, in an effort to raise awareness about bat conservation.
Last year, Barbara, a cannon bat from Lake County, Oregon, took home the title, making the state a two-time consecutive winner.
