Battagram Chair Lift Accident
Reportedly, an open cable car was halfway across a ravine when it became stranded in the morning. The chairlift in Battagram was hanging by a single cable as one of the ropes snapped due to which eight of the people remained stuck inside the cable for over 15 hours. As mentioned, the cable of the chairlift snapped in the morning, the Pakistani troopers had rescued two of the children before sunset. Later the rescue team of the Pakistani Army initiated a ground operation which was led by SSG’s General Officer Commanding (GOC) to retrieve the remaining stuck people on the chairlift with alternative means. Still, five people were on the cable car after the two children were rescued with the help of a helicopter. A smaller cable car was hung on the same cable to retrieve the people and give them food and water. The troopers also brought in a local cable-crossing expert for the rescue operation.
In addition, the Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Army Aviation took part in the rescue operation along with the SSG troops. There were several complications in this rescue operation due to gusty winds in Battagram and the danger of the helicopter’s blades further destabilizing the lift. Somehow the rescue team saved all the people stuck in the cable car. Shortly after successfully rescuing all 8 people, political leaders began pouring praise on the army’s rescue team, district authorities, and local people who were involved in the task.
A tweet from the President of Pakistan came up following the rescue operation, “I am ecstatic to learn about the safe rescue of all kids of the Battagram chairlift. Must appreciate all, our military personnel, local rescuers, and the entire administration, for showing commitment and bravery in this most critical rescue.” A report says that a local person and seven schoolchildren were traveling in a cable car to go to the Batangi Government High School.
