Who is the course instructor?
Associate Professor of Medieval Arabic Literature, Professor Emily Selove will lead the new program.
What is the name of the course offered?
By offering a postgraduate degree in ‘Magic and Occult Sciences’, which examines the background and influences of witchcraft and magic on society and science throughout history, the university hopes to capitalize on the growing popularity of these subjects .
In recent years it has been popular to “dismiss the study of magic and the occult,” based on the belief that “it is no longer important to modern people,” explains Professor Emily Selove. However, this has changed now, she added.
Where will the course be offered?
The course will be offered at the University of Exeter, in the United Kingdom.
The Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies will host the graduate program which, according to Professor Selove, recognizes “the deep debt of Western culture and science to the Arab-Islamic world, a history that has been erased by creating our false image of “The West is exceptionally rational.”
When can prospective students register?
The interdisciplinary degree program, launching in September 2024, will use history, literature, philosophy, archaeology, sociology, psychology, theater and religion to demonstrate the importance of magic both in the West and in East.
Why was such an unconventional course added in the first place?
Professor Selove explained that the most pressing issues facing our society are at the heart of the recent surge in interest in magic and the occult, both within and outside of academia. The main focus of this program is decolonization, alternative epistemological research, feminism and anti-racism.
The course will combine conventional Western academic methods with less conventional ones, and students will be able to finish their dissertations through performance pieces. Furthermore, this particular program aims to provide students with critical thinking, creative thinking, curiosity, and lifelong learning skills.
The legend of King Arthur, paleography, Islamic thought, archaeological theory and practice, the representation of women in the Middle Ages, the book in medieval and modern Europe, gender, society and culture in Europe Early modern science and the philosophy of psychedelics are among the modules that students will have the option to take.
How are people reacting?
According to Professor Selove, since the introduction of the course, more than 100 questions have been asked to the university.
