What is this preserved city in China about?
One of China’s remaining examples of its imperial past is a completely submerged metropolis.
According to National Geographic, the city of Shicheng in Zhejiang province was intentionally flooded in 1959 to make way for the Xinan hydroelectric project and was “forgotten” for many years. It is a realm suspended in time, 40 meters below the surface of Lake Qiandao.
More than 300,000 people had to be relocated when the area flooded, National Geographic reported.
According to the BBC, the Ming and Qing dynasties, which ruled from 1368 to 1912, are represented in the stone architecture.
Due to its proximity to Wu Shi Mountain, also known as “Five Lions Mountain” in Mandarin, Shicheng is often referred to as the “Lion City”. It is also known as the “Atlantis of the East” because the city remains beautifully underwater.
Water actually protects it from degradation from the sun, rain and wind. Today it is still possible to explore the hidden world, but only those with experience in diving, especially in deep water, can take excursions.
Since the location has not been comprehensively mapped, novice visitors are discouraged from visiting.
When was it rediscovered?
It was rediscovered in 2001, but Shicheng itself was largely forgotten.
Where is this 600 year old city located?
It is located 40 meters (131 ft) below Qiandao Lake. Divers have learned to amass a collection of extraordinary photographs.
Additionally, visitors were allowed to immerse themselves in the city in 2017, according to Indy100.
Unfortunately, you may not be able to cross it off your bucket list because you will need considerable diving experience, especially night, deep-sea and exploratory diving.
