Bicycle taxi drivers write to Delhi LG

The recently announced “Motor Vehicle and Delivery Service Provider Aggregation Scheme 2023”, which will come into effect next week, has been the subject of a letter from the Apna Bike Taxi Association, which claims to represent 1,000 motorcycle taxi drivers. in Delhi. The letter was sent to Lieutenant Governor Vijay Saxena. The group requests more time from LG to implement the two-wheeler driving policy. As per the new policy, a two-wheeler taxi aggregator can operate in the city provided it uses only electric vehicles.

As long as all vehicles added to the fleet after the plan launch date are exclusively electric vehicles, the Aggregator may offer bike taxi (also known as two-wheel taxi) services. The policy states that in such circumstances, the driver of a two-wheeler taxi shall comply with the requirements laid down for drivers of passenger service vehicles in the Central Motor Vehicles Act (CMVA), the Central Motor Vehicle Rules ( CMVR) and Delhi Motor Vehicle Rules (DMVR). More than 50,000 cyclists in the city will be affected by the change, according to Arendar Singh, director of the Apna Bike Taxi Association, who spoke to Entrackr. He also mentioned that they are asking for an extension of up to two years to put the policy into effect, that is, to start using electric cars.

Singh also mentioned that the city lacks strong infrastructure for electric two-wheelers. Furthermore, he stated that electric two-wheelers are expensive and of poor quality. The aforementioned plan calls for all risky bike taxi drivers to switch to e-bikes overnight, but makes no recommendations on how this switch would be funded or helped. Entrackr has studied the association’s letter, which stated that “this is completely impracticable and invariably affects more than fifty thousand motorcycle taxi drivers in the city and puts the livelihood of their families at risk.”
