“Real Time” host Bill Maher attacked prominent Democrats whom he accused of running “shadow campaigns” and congratulated Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., who formally launched a primary challenge against President Biden.
Maher praised Phillips’ entry into the Democratic primary last week, and while he stressed to the candidate that he wasn’t necessarily an endorsement, he told 2024 hopefuls that he “might” eventually endorse him.
“I supported the idea,” Maher said Friday, “because a couple of weeks ago I did an editorial calling [Biden] Ruth Bader Biden. And she looks, we both struggle with the same thing. We like Joe Biden, right? And we think he’s done a good job. “Ruth Bader Ginsburg did a good job and didn’t know when she would quit, and that’s why you’re here.”
“And it’s not like others are doing this in some kind of shadow campaign,” Maher said later. “I mean, Gavin Newsom, our governor, seems to be all over the world.”
“I saw that,” Phillips smiled.
“You know, they go to the battleground states privately; they’re really doing it, but I feel like at least you’re honest and you say, ‘No, I’m going to do it.’ Do it.”

Phillips, who has been outspoken in encouraging other Democrats to enter the primary, noted that there are “21 of us on the ballot in New Hampshire,” and told Maher that all it takes is a $1,000 check and be 35 years old. Citizen born in the United States to “become a candidate for president of the United States.”
He also mentioned how in his failed attempt to recruit another formidable rival, he tried to corner Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who he said would make “an exceptional president.”
“And she’s one of those running a shadow campaign,” Maher chimed in.

“Everyone is waiting until 2028,” Phillips said. “And tonight I tell all of you that I am not sure that we will have an election in 2028 the way we hope to happen if the inevitable happens and it is President Biden against Donald Trump. I mean, the numbers surprise everyone. If we don’t start to recognize that there is this strange and very dangerous culture of silence in Washington, in certain complex political-industrial circles, that is dangerous, I mean, dangerous. And we are putting on blinders. It will make 2016 seem like a happy year.”
After Maher praised Newsom, who he said needs to “move toward the center,” and Vice President Kamala Harris, who has even worse poll numbers than Biden, Phillips reiterated that “the more the merrier” when it comes to to Biden’s potential rivals.
“It is still not too late to jump into this race. I wish we had more competition instead of coordination. “This isn’t that hard and I don’t understand why people are so hesitant to do what the country so desperately needs,” Phillips said. “I called candidates who, I believe, are closer to the race. They didn’t answer my call. They had their political people take the call. They asked me not to use their names. You know, when I say that most of my colleagues talk about this every day quietly in the hallways, I mean the quiet part out loud.”

Maher, who was previously a longtime Biden supporter, began expressing doubts about the president’s chances in the 2024 election during his “Club Random” meeting with Democratic strategist James Carville, who is also sounding the alarm based on recent surveys.
“I think we’re on the same page as Biden,” Maher said. “He did a great service, but while in 2020 he was maybe the only one who could have beaten Trump, I think now he is the only one who will lose to him.”
“He did very well not only because he beat Trump, but, you know, a lot of things he did: Afghanistan, Ukraine, he handled it well, everyone else’s economy was worse than ours after the pandemic. These are pretty important things,” he continued. “But he will lose because, at some point, perception becomes reality. And he looks, do I think he can do the job? Absolutely. Government, as you know better than anyone, is conducted in small rooms like the Oval Office, where people talk quietly and decisions are made. I think he can still do well. He can’t run for president. “He will look bad in the debates… I think he will lose.”
