California cafe fires anti-Semitic employees who prevented Jewish customer from using bathroom

Three California coffee shop employees who were seen preventing a Jewish woman from using the bathroom while she made anti-Israel comments in a now-viral video are now out of work in Java.

Amy and Chris Hillyard, the owners of Farley’s East in Oakland, posted on social media Sunday that the employees seen in the video berating the customer “was shocking and unacceptable” and are now unemployed because of their actions.

“We do not tolerate any behavior at Farley’s that makes people feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Because this act was not aligned with our values, the employees involved in the incident are no longer employees of Farley’s,” Hillyards posted on the store’s social media.

“Events like these instill fear in the Jewish community and perpetuate the rise of anti-Semitism in our community and around the world.”

“We can and must do better, and this starts with creating a safe space for anyone who frequents our coffee shop.”

The video, recorded by the customer, showed three of their employees preventing the woman from using the store’s bathroom.

The owners stated that acts of hate would not be tolerated in their business. A worker tells the woman, “I know Israel loves to take private property and say it’s theirs.”

“I shouldn’t be left out when other people are allowed,” she tells the employee at the neighboring company.

One of the cafeteria employees tells him that he can “use the other bathroom” in the cafeteria, but the customer insists on using the one with the graffiti.

A woman who works at a neighboring business offered the customer of the Jewish cafe to use the bathroom next door.

The staff suddenly relents and allows the customer to enter the bathroom.

When he enters to film the bathroom, the employee rudely states that “the story did not begin in 1948, ma’am,” apparently referring to the year Israel was established.

Before the three employees were fired, Farley’s apologized Thursday after growing outrage over the viral video.

“Staff mishandled the situation and we apologize for this mistake and the distress caused to the customer. “We have taken corrective action with our staff and have removed the offensive graffiti,” the cafe said in its initial apology.

“We are committed to ongoing staff training to achieve a safe and welcoming environment. Thank you for understanding that we are a small business doing our best to operate a community business in a difficult environment.”
