In an unusual turn of events, a university student union has boldly banned a certain outfit within its facilities. Surprisingly, this outfit is not offensive or inappropriate, but rather an everyday outfit that many people wear.
The problem at hand lies not with the clothing itself, but with the wearers of this outfit, who have been responsible for disturbing behavior, leading to the ban.
Cardiff University Students’ Union had to ban people wearing blue shirts and chinos from a nightclub called YOLO in the union bar on Wednesdays.
Why did the Student Union ban blue shirts and chinos?
This action was taken due to the behavior of some attendees who wore this outfit on a recent night.
The trouble began in line for the Wednesday night event on Oct. 4 when several men were observed engaging in “reckless, dangerous and highly irresponsible” behavior.
This style of clothing is often associated with sports clubs, but the exact nature of the behavior that led to the ban is still unclear.
According to the BBC, the Students’ Union informed members of the university’s Athletic Union in an email:
“The behavior shown by the group in question can only be described as reckless, dangerous and irresponsible. Fortunately, security was able to intervene and disperse the crowd safely; however, the situation could have easily escalated into a major incident if action had not been taken promptly.”
Since the ban was implemented, the Students’ Union has reported a marked improvement in the behavior of people waiting in the queue.
The email added, “If any group knows who the men were who caused this incident, I advise the committee to contact Athletic Union staff, and the matter can be addressed. While we understand that this approach may not be favorable to all until we are confident that those behaviors have been eliminated, we will continue with this restriction.”
The behavioral change observed as a result of banning specific items of clothing may seem unusual, as it involves the same people wearing different clothing.
However, there is likely a rational basis for this result. It could be attributed to the realization that disruptive behavior could have serious consequences. This serves as a cautionary note: even if one prefers blue shirts and chinos, entry to this event in such attire will not be permitted.
