Carnival cruise ship crew rescues two kayakers stranded in the Gulf of Mexico

Crew members of a Carnival cruise ship rescued two men stranded in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday.

Workers aboard the Carnival Jubilee spotted the couple paddling a small yellow and orange kayak off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

The men paddled the kayak alongside the large cruise ship and the crew helped them onto the ship, according to the cruise line and photos of the rescue.

They said their boat had capsized and they used the kayak to stay afloat, Carnival said in a statement.

Once safely aboard the cruise ship, the couple was evaluated by Carnival medical staff and provided first aid, as well as food and water.

The crew members reported their rescue to staff at Carnival’s fleet operations center in Miami and both contacted Mexican Navy officials. They arranged a transfer and a Navy ship came to pick up the two kayakers shortly after the initial rescue, Carnival said.

The men said their boat sank and they used a kayak to stay afloat in the Gulf of Mexico. Crew members from the Carnival ship saw the couple and helped lift them aboard. Carnival

The cruise ship then continued its journey, heading to Mahogany Bay, Roatan, which it visited on Tuesday.

The rescue is the second time a Carnival ship has saved people stranded in the ocean in just over a month.

The crew of the Carnival Vista ship rescued six men floating in a life raft in the dark ocean off the Dominican Republic on December 13.

The captain received an emergency alert about the stranded men and immediately steered the ship toward them (and away from its planned course) to save them.

Carnival officers aboard the ship spotted the men in a bright orange reflective life raft in the early-morning darkness and brought them aboard the ship.

The men’s small cargo boat had capsized overnight and six others who were on the boat were in another life raft, which was later located and rescued by the Coast Guard.

The dramatic rescue was filmed by a Carnival Vista passenger who posted the clip on TikTok. A person off camera can be heard exclaiming how “crazy” the experience was in the video.
