Chandrayaan-3 Achieves Perfect Landing, Ignites Celebration Across The Internet

The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 mission has finally been completed after a 40-day trip that began at the Sathish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The Vikram lander made a soft lunar landing on August 23 at 6.04 p.m. IST.

So far, only three countries have made a soft landing on the Moon: the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China, and all of their spacecraft have landed near the Moon’s equator. India created history.

Till date, only three countries have made a soft landing on the moon, and India is now a part of them

The Chandrayaan-3 mission is the follow-up to the Chandrayaan-2 mission, which crashed into the lunar surface in 2019. The mission’s principal goal is straightforward: to demonstrate the space agency’s capacity to perform a soft landing on the Moon. If the mission is successful, India will join a small and elite group of countries that have soft-landed on the moon. The club now has three members: the United States, the Soviet Union, and China.

So far, only three countries have made a soft landing on the Moon: the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China, and all of their spacecraft have landed near the Moon’s equator. There’s a reason for this. The Moon’s polar regions are relatively inhospitable, with topography and temperatures unsuitable for long-term space missions.

Many past orbiter missions, like the Chandrayaan-1 mission in 2008, have revealed that the Moon’s comparatively unexplored polar regions hold intriguing potential. There is a possibility that evidence of frozen ice will be discovered there.

Furthermore, because these locations are exceedingly cold, anything caught there would have frozen in place, effectively converting the spaces into a “time capsule” of sorts. Exploring the Moon’s polar regions could help scientists better comprehend the solar system’s early existence, including the birth of our planet and the Moon.

The landing area for Chandrayaan-3 has been enlarged. Instead of the previous mission’s patch of 500 metres by 500 metres, Chandrayaan-3’s software includes instructions to land anywhere within a four-by-four-kilometre radius. In addition, the lander was given more fuel so that it could travel a greater distance to an alternate site if necessary.

Aside from this and other alterations to the mission settings and software, various physical changes to the lander’s structure were made. The lander’s middle thruster was deleted, leaving it with four rather than five thrusters. Its legs were also strengthened to handle higher-velocity landings.
