Chinese woman disrupts ex-husband’s wedding with banner for unpaid $140,000 divorce settlement

Luo, a woman from China’s Sichuan province, recently attracted attention by attending her ex-husband’s wedding with a banner reading “I accept concubines on behalf of my husband.”

A disagreement over the divorce settlement spurred her bold action, quickly sparking an intense online discussion.

According to a SCMP report, Luo and her ex-husband, Li, finalized their divorce in 2019.

According to a Red Star News report, Li was awarded custody of their daughter and agreed to pay Luo 1 million yuan (US$140,000) in their divorce settlement.

In addition, Li was supposed to provide monthly payments of 5,000 yuan, cover medical expenses, and provide business insurance until Luo remarried.

Unfortunately, Li defaulted on his financial obligations and remarried in January. Despite unsuccessful attempts at court mediation, Luo decided to take matters into his own hands.

During Li’s wedding, Luo raised awareness by distributing flyers to guests and posting messages on social media platforms expressing her grievances.

Luo also displayed a protest banner at the entrance of the residential community where the wedding took place.

The banner boldly declared: “Someone loves my husband dearly, and as his lawful wife, I am here today to propose to him and accept concubines in his name.”

In response, Li took legal action against Luo by filing three defamation lawsuits and a child custody order.

However, during a new court mediation process, Li finally agreed to make the due payments in three installments. In return, Luo publicly apologized for his behavior at the wedding.

This story has sparked a heated debate on social media across the continent, with discussions about the reasons for the divorce and gender equality.

According to SCMP, one person asked about the purpose of the 1 million yuan compensation, either for infidelity or as part of the asset division.

Another person commented: “Even though the husband received custody and paid compensation, why is there still a monthly alimony requirement? It is undeniable that the man was the one who deceived first. He strongly desired a divorce and immediately agreed to the woman’s demands.”

Some accused Luo of being motivated by greed, stating: “Without remarrying, he can earn a monthly income of 5,000 yuan, which is more than what a regular job offers. The woman is being greedy.”

Another person asked, “Is there a specific time frame for all three installments? Are there penalties for late payments? If these details are not specified, the ex-wife will still have to seek compensation while the new couple enjoys their brave new world.”

Concerns were also raised about the lack of specific deadlines and penalties for late payments, highlighting the potential difficulties for the ex-wife in seeking compensation. At the same time, the new couple is enjoying their new life together. Online discussions continue to develop as different perspectives are shared.
