Thatcher developed her own political interests after her father’s death in 1971. She was a Liberal who won the Thunder Creek provincial election in 1975 before defecting to the Progressive Conservatives two years later. Thatcher was Energy Secretary from 1982 to 1983. Thatcher resigned from her position on 17 January 1983, citing personal and monetary concerns.

Geiger spent nearly three weeks in the hospital as a result of the incident. She never held anyone responsible for the 1981 shooting.
The murder of Colin Thatcher’s ex-wife
Geiger was discovered dead in her Regina garage on January 21, 1983, four days after Thatcher announced her retirement as energy minister in Prime Minister Grant Devine’s administration. On May 7, 1984, Thatcher was finally charged after a lengthy police investigation.
In the late summer and early fall of 1984, Thatcher faced a murder trial in Saskatoon. She insisted on appearing to try to explain the recorded conversation between him and Gary Anderson, in addition to the evidence offered. Serge Kujawa led the prosecution and, after a jury found him guilty, he was given a life sentence with a 25-year parole ban.
Two weeks before his appeal, in late April 1985, a package arrived at the Regina Leader-Post with a Winnipeg postmark. Included in the package were a homemade ax that the letter said was the murder weapon, an anonymous confession to Geiger’s murder, and two photographs of a naked woman who the letter said was Geiger. The publication handed the package over to Regina Police. The crown finally acknowledged to Thatcher’s lawyer that the images and the ax had been lost after many requests for their release.
Thatcher’s full parole was granted on 30 November 2006.

The 440-page book Final Appeal: Anatomy of a Frame, published by Thatcher, discusses her legal situation. On September 1, 2009, ECW Press published it. Thatcher agreed to forfeit all profits from the sale of her book, including the $5,000 advance her publisher gave him on April 21, 2010.
Additionally, Thatcher has instructed the Saskatchewan Minister of Finance on how to handle additional royalties from the sale of her book. The Ministry of Justice received $13,866.44 in revenue from the sale of the book in 2011.
