From the year 2016-2018, he was a member of the Parliament of Tura. He is the former leader of the opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Sangma’s NPP party allied with regional parties due to the requirement of having at least 30 seats to form a government. He was declared the Chief Minister of the state and was sworn in on March 6, replacing Mukul Sangma, who is not related to him but is his biggest rival.
