Convicted sex offender is back behind bars after his mother helped him escape from prison

A convicted sex offender was back behind bars Monday after he managed to escape from a Texas prison after being disguised by his mother.

Robert Yancy Jr., 39, was arrested about 45 miles southwest of the Brazoria County Jail on Monday after fleeing the Matagorda County lockup a day earlier, according to county officials.

Two people have been arrested for helping Yancy devise the plan and carry out his daring escape.

Yancy’s mother, Leonor Priestle, has been charged with permitting/facilitating her son’s escape, while her boyfriend, Russell Williams, has been charged with criminal attempt to escape, authorities said. Yancy was also charged with felony escape.

The debacle began Sunday when Priestle visited his son in prison while wearing a black sweater and beanie. The mother somehow passed the items to Yancy and he quickly changed his clothes without anyone noticing, the Clemens Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) told ABC13.

Priestle also allegedly gave his son, a sex criminal, an identification card that allowed him to get out of prison. Although the identification card did not have his name on it, Yancy was able to leave the prison with his mother around 3:38 pm without correctional officers realizing the deception.

Authorities revealed that Priestle was a former TDCJ correctional officer and worked at the McConnell Unit in Beeville from March 2010 to September 2011.

Officials speculated that Yancy’s mother had inside information from that previous job to help him slip out of the guarded facility undetected.

After leaving jail, Yancy and his mother got into a white 2021 Nissan Versa and drove off, according to the Brazoria County District 4 Constable’s Office. After cops discovered an inmate was on the loose, the license plate of her mother’s Nissan was entered into a statewide license plate reading system.

Priestle was stopped by police at a traffic light shortly before 8:30 pm on Sunday, about 110 miles west of the prison, but her runaway son was not found. She was arrested on an outstanding warrant related to Yancy’s escape from prison.

It was unclear Sunday what role her boyfriend, Williams, played in her son’s escape.

Fortunately, park-goers alerted to the escape recognized Yancy at FM 521 River Park and called authorities on Monday.

Yancy reportedly attempted to use the prison ID his mother allegedly gave him as his own when confronted by police, but ultimately confessed.

The escapee was still wearing his white prison clothes in a photo released by the prison.

Yancy is currently serving his life sentence without parole in the prison’s Clemens Unit after he was convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a child for repeatedly abusing a 7-year-old girl over three years, authorities said.

The jury only took 23 minutes to deliberate his sentence during his two-day trial in May 2022, according to the Victoria Advocate.

“We want to thank everyone involved for working together and capturing this dangerous individual as quickly as possible,” TDCJ said after his capture.

The Brazoria County Detention Center is about 40 miles southwest of Houston.

Yancy was the second inmate to escape from the Clemens Unit this year, according to ABC13. On October 6, Cadarion Avery, who was an inmate in housing outside the main prison for inmates serving non-violent sentences, wandered away from the unit but was found nearby shortly afterwards.

TDCJ said the unit was investigating security processes and investigating areas for improvement.
