In the West Midlands, a Walsall couple spent a month thinking messages about their winning lottery ticket were spam. After ignoring their messages for four weeks, they were surprised when they finally contacted Camelot, the lottery operator.
James Briggs, 42, and his wife, Sally, 40, were in for a big surprise.
James said, “I buy my Set For Life tickets a month in advance through the National Lottery app. I received an email about the giveaway on August 3rd, but I ignored it because there was a lot going on. He was busy with work, including an international trip to attend a conference. We then went on holiday to Berlin to celebrate Sally’s birthday. There were things to do at home, so I didn’t read it until after seeing the fourth email, when we returned from vacation. “I didn’t say anything to Sally, but I called the National Lottery line the next day to see if all these emails were true.”
He added, “I called the next morning, still wondering if it was real, but after chatting with several people and seeing everything on the app, I finally realized it might actually be true.”
“After receiving the confirmation call from the National Lottery, I texted Sally at work and told her I had some news for her when she got home.”

Sally, who works as a fleet planner, admitted she panicked when she first saw James’ message and immediately assumed it was some “problem”.
She said: “I thought there was a problem. I couldn’t think about anything else until I got home. Then James told me, and I kept repeating: ‘You what?’ He was in total disbelief.”
The couple used their first earnings to pay off the car loan. With the remaining £120,000, they plan to buy a “shed” for Sally, go on holiday, buy a laptop and get a new front door.
They also intend to invest in long-term property and are planning a trip to Vancouver. The senior implementation specialist didn’t know they had just won £10,000 a month for the following year.
“I wasn’t sure if it was spam or real emails. It was a Sunday night (September 10), and Sally and I were sorting out details before returning to work the next day. I was checking my emails while watching TV “
