A Washington, D.C., police officer was suspended after leading Virginia police officers on a high-speed chase that ended when his Tesla crashed into another car, injuring his own passenger and the other driver, authorities said.
Peter McCauley, 25, was booked Wednesday night after Virginia State Police caught him driving 95 mph in a 55 mph zone on I-395 in northern Virginia, 7NewsDC reports.
Although a state trooper attempted to stop the car, McCauley allegedly accelerated to miss the trooper, exceeding speeds of 119 mph as he turned onto Seminary Road, according to court documents.
That’s when McCauley ran a red light and his Tesla veered into the path of a passing Honda, which crashed into the electric car.
The impact caused McCauley’s car to spin out of control until it stopped, leaving his passenger injured.
Peter McCauley, 25, an off-duty Washington DC officer was arrested after leading police on a chase that exceeded 119 mph. Police and first responders blocked off the section of Seminary Road where McCauley collided with another vehicle.
The crash also caused the Honda to crash into a nearby concrete barrier on the highway, injuring the driver, police said.
Both women were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for minor injuries. McCauley was arrested and charged with felony eluding police.
The Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department said they were notified of McCauley’s arrest on Thanksgiving Day.
The off-duty officer was allegedly driving 95 mph in a 55 mph zone and accelerated after police attempted to pull him over. A state trooper arrived after McCauley’s Tesla stopped after spinning out of control and the Honda that crashed crashed into a concrete barrier.
“MPD’s Internal Affairs Division responded and immediately revoked the officer’s police powers and placed him on no-contact status,” the department said in a statement. “The incident is under investigation by the MPD Internal Affairs Division.”
McCauley, a member of the force since June 2020, is the second off-duty MPD officer arrested this month for careless driving.
On Nov. 11, Officer John Bewley was arrested for DUI, resisting arrest and obstructing justice after showing up in his police cruiser to allegedly interfere with another DUI investigation against his girlfriend, according to court documents.
MPD said Bewley was also placed on “no contact status,” and the case is still under investigation.
Representatives for McCauley and Bewley could not immediately be reached for comment.
