Dallas school bus driver saves 7-year-old boy who swallowed quarter: ‘She’s my hero’

A 7-year-old boy declared his Dallas bus driver a “hero” when she saved his life after swallowing a quarter.

Preston, whose last name was not revealed, was laughing with his friends moments before bus surveillance footage showed him putting something in his mouth.

The Seagoville North Elementary School student, who thought he was going to vomit on Sept. 29, ran toward his driver Raquel Radford Baker.

“He looked sick, like he was going to throw up,” Baker told “GMA.” “I opened the door and said, ‘Go ahead and throw up.’”

Moments later, he would tell her that he had a coin in his throat, and Baker sprang into action, grabbing Preston and performing the Heimlich as she ran toward the sidewalk.

“He can’t die in my arms, I have to save his life,” he remembers thinking.

On Thursday, Preston, her mother and Baker had a meeting, where her mother tearfully thanked Baker for saving Preston.

It was the first time Baker had to save a child’s life, he said.

As for Preston, he promises not to put coins in his mouth.
