Who is this man?
The man who is gaining internet fame for all the wrong reasons is a 50-year-old Lithuanian expat. No further details about the man’s identity have been revealed so far.
What happened?
According to Daily Loud, authorities in Spain’s Blanca region arrested an individual known for consuming meals prepared at local restaurants and subsequently faking a heart attack to evade payment. The image of the 50-year-old man has been circulated among area restaurants as a precaution. The outlet, citing police, reported that he had successfully defrauded more than 20 restaurants.
When were you arrested?
After scamming a handful of restaurants in Spain, the man was finally caught last month when staff at one of the hotels he was setting up flashed a bill in front of him.
Where was he caught?
The Lithuanian frequented El Buen Comer, a restaurant in Alicante where he enjoyed a seafood paella and a few drinks of whiskey until a waiter presented him with the bill for his meal.
How was the scam revealed?
Last month, at El Buen Comer, after the man tasted their seafood and alcohol, he was presented with a bill for 34.85 euros (3,062 rupees). He apparently tried to leave without paying and the staff stopped him and reminded him of the outstanding bill.
He then claimed he would get the money back for his hotel room, but the staff were not fooled and the scammer was prevented from leaving. In response, she resorted to faking a heart attack, attempting to fool the restaurant staff.
Realizing the deception, the restaurant staff refrained from calling for medical assistance and instead quickly alerted the police. Upon the arrival of the agents, the individual persisted in demanding medical assistance, oblivious to the fact that the agents had already identified him from previous encounters in other establishments in Alicante.
Why didn’t the restaurant buy his performance?
According to the manager of El Buen Comer, he was not a very convincing actor. The manager said, according to The Sun US: “He was very theatrical, he pretended to faint and collapsed on the floor.”
The manager then added: “We have sent his photo to all the restaurants to try to prevent him from attacking again.”
The expatriate was recently sentenced to 42 days in prison for refusing to pay two fines, as both incidents were classified as “misdemeanors” due to the relatively low amount.
Meanwhile, the restaurant owners are considering filing a class-action complaint, a move that could result in the individual being sentenced to a maximum of two years in prison.
