Debris from failed demolition nearly hits car and pedestrians in Miami

Miami residents were spooked when a demolition job turned treacherous after an unstable piece of concrete slid onto a busy street, narrowly missing a passing car.

Viral video of the demolition It shows a crane appearing to try to grab a huge slab of concrete on one of the upper floors of a building that was knocked down on Brickell Avenue on Saturday.

The crane, however, fails to grab the slab, as it tilts and falls to the street, while onlookers scream in terror.

Concrete crashes into the construction barricade placed around the building, debris flies onto the road and nearly hits a passing black car, and a woman also turns and looks back to see her near miss.

City officials said no one was injured during the incident and the demolition company in charge, Alpha Wrecking, was instructed to quickly remove all other unstable pieces of the building.

The demolition has since been ordered to stop, indefinitely, and police stationed at the site to keep residents away.

Lt. Pete Sanchez of Miami Fire Rescue said the building will remain standing until the city, the owners and the demolition company establish a plan to tear it down without further incident.

“They’re going to re-evaluate this plan and make sure they develop a safer security initiative so they can demolish this building and make sure there are no more incidents with it,” he told NBC 6.

The city said in a statement that it would hold an emergency meeting on Monday to ensure the safe demolition of the Brickell building.

Alpha Wrecking did not immediately respond to the Post’s request for comment.

The demolition will make way for construction of One Brickell City Center, a new 68-story commercial building set to be completed in 2027.

It is not yet clear whether Saturday’s incident will delay the building’s completion date.
