DeSantis and Newsom officially agree to Fox News debate on November 30

The red-blue showdown that policy experts have been waiting for is happening.

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will face Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a debate hosted by Fox News host Sean Hannity on Nov. 30, the network announced Monday.

The made-for-cable news event will take place at a to-be-determined location in the swing state of Georgia.

The two governors have taunted and surrounded each other for months. In June, Hannity launched a verbal spat between the two political titans during an interview with Newsom and the pair quickly signed off in public as their teams hashed out details behind the scenes.

“I look forward to offering viewers an informative discussion about the everyday issues and philosophies that influence the lives of all Americans,” Hannity said in a statement.

Decline is a choice and success is achievable. As President, I will lead America’s renaissance.

“Decline is a choice and success is achievable. As President, I will lead America’s renaissance. I look forward to the opportunity to debate with Gavin Newsom about our very different visions for the future of our country,” DeSantis posted on

Both men have called themselves avatars of two divergent visions of American politics, with DeSantis criticizing Newsom over high taxes, homelessness and crime in California.

“I mean, in one respect, the debate between California and Florida has already been had, as you suggest. People have been voting on that,” DeSantis told Hannity in August. “They have been voting with their feet. “They have fled California in record numbers.”

Newsom, for his part, has criticized DeSantis for bans on critical race theory in classrooms, bans on instruction related to sexual orientation and gender identity for children in kindergarten through fourth grade, and restrictions on abortion.

In April, Newsom flew to DeSantis’ territory to condemn changes enacted at the New College of Florida in Sarasota.

DeSantis had tried to eradicate “wokeness” and liberal excesses by replacing the board of directors of that small public institution.

Florida’s governor will be in the Golden State on Wednesday for the second 2024 primary debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles.

Republicans will hold their third debate in Miami on November 8, the date that was initially proposed for the confrontation between DeSantis and Newsom.

DeSantis has maintained a packed campaign itinerary in recent weeks, touring the early states with a particular focus on Iowa.

Newsom has long generated rumors about the possibility of mounting a last-minute bid to be the Democratic standard-bearer.

However, he has stubbornly denied any plans to do so and wholeheartedly backed President Biden.

DeSantis is the second-highest polling Republican behind former President Donald Trump, who leads him by a whopping 43.8 percentage points in the latest RealClearPolitics average.

Newsom has repeatedly criticized his Florida counterpart over the deficit, telling Politico earlier this month that DeSantis had “failed.”

“The best thing that could happen to DeSantis,” the California Democrat said at the time, “is that tomorrow he packs his bags, keeps his money and fights another day.”
