DeWine, a Republican, vetoed the GOP-backed Saving Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act on Friday, sparking outrage from conservatives who criticized him as a “coward” for his decision.
The bill would have banned gender affirmation procedures for minors in the Buckeye State and would have additionally banned transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
“If I were to sign House Substitute Bill 68 or if House Substitute Bill 68 were to become law, Ohio would be saying that the State, that the government, knows what is best from the standpoint of doctor for a child instead of the two people who love that child the most. , the parents,” DeWine said in his veto message.
