Discord has announced a monumental policy change coming in late 2023 that will dramatically impact how its platform can be exploited for malicious purposes. The company will implement temporary file links that completely expire after just 24 hours for all Discord users.
This massive change will effectively prevent attackers from using Discord’s extensive content delivery network (CDN) to host and distribute harmful malware payloads indefinitely. The short 24-hour lifespan will slow the spread of malware.
According to Discord itself, this landmark update will greatly allow its security team to restrict access to dangerous and flagged content. Although the authenticator app update has not yet officially rolled out, Discord revealed that expiration timestamps and unique signatures have already been added to links.
Once the new policy is active, these parameters will be strictly enforced. Any links shared outside of Discord servers will become invalid after 24 hours.
The company explained that the links currently contain three special parameters: an expiration timestamp, a unique signature, and a hash.
