Doberman with bridle around muzzle rescued and adopted by Indiana police officer

An Indiana dog discovered abandoned with a tight bridle around his snout has found a new home: with the police officer who rescued him.

Zeus, a large black and brown Doberman, was discovered running loose and alone Friday by concerned residents in South Bend with a tightly tied plastic restraint that prevented him from opening his mouth.

When the Samaritans couldn’t catch the dog, they called the South Bend Police Department for help.

Officer Stephanie Northcutt arrived and managed to corner the frightened dog, then crouched down and approached him with her hand outstretched.

“You’re so pretty, do you trust me?” She was heard telling the dog in a video of the rescue released by police.

After a few nervous glances, Zeus finally leaned down to sniff Northcutt’s hand, allowing him to grab his leash.

Others present approached with scissors and cut the tie, to the apparent relief of Zeus.

Later footage showed the dog with a distinctive ligature mark around his snout, but affectionately petting Northcutt and allowing him to pet him before being loaded into a car for transport to South Bend Animal Rescue.

“Are we friends? Friends? You’re okay. You’re so pretty,” Northcutt said.

Zeus was discovered with a tight zip tie around his mouth on Friday before being released.

On Monday, the police department shared the news that the officer had decided to adopt the dog.

“Officer Northcutt said she knew the moment she saw the puppy that he was the perfect fit for her family,” police said in a Facebook post.

“The dog, now named Zeus, spent some time joining Northcutt’s other dogs before Officer Northcutt made it official.”

Despite the condition in which he was found, police said Zeus is not expected to suffer any lasting physical harm from the tie.

Zeus wasn’t even the first dog Officer Northcutt adopted after a call; He previously welcomed another dog he rescued from an abusive situation while on duty.

“She joked that St. Joseph County 9-1-1 dispatchers should stop sending her on animal calls because she will soon run out of space in her home,” South Bend police said.

It is still unclear what circumstances led to Zeus’ dangerous situation, but police said they are continuing to investigate.
