Birth and early life
Draupadi Murmu was born on June 20, 1958 in Uparbeda village of Odisha. She was the daughter of Biranchi Narayan Tudu and was brought up in a Santali tribal family. She has two siblings, Bhagat Tudu and Sarani Tudu. Under the Panchayati Raj, her father and grandfather had served as village headmen.
Draupadi attended KBHS Uparpeda School in Mayurbanj for her education. She completed her Bachelor’s degree from Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar.

Career
Initially, Murmu worked as a teacher in public schools as a junior assistant in the irrigation division of the Government of Odisha and an assistant professor at the Shri Aurobindo Institute of Comprehensive Education and Research. In 1997, she became a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party and was elected as a councillor.
She was also the national vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Party Scheduled Tribes Morcha. She served as Minister of State with independent charge of Commerce and Transport, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development under the coalition administration of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Biju Janata Dal in Odisha from August 6, 2002 to May 16, 2004.
