Lennert Wouters, a cybersecurity expert, claimed it only cost him $25 to create a device that could break into Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service.
In a press release, Wouters said, “The wide availability of Starlink User Terminals (UTs) exposes them to hackers and opens the door for an attacker to freely explore the network.”
SpaceX did not respond to an Insider’s request for comment. The security flaw was exposed earlier this week at a computer security conference in Las Vegas by Wouters, a researcher at the Belgian university KU Leuven.
He showed off a modchip, commonly known as a DIY circuit board, to guests on Wednesday, according to Wired. The modchip would immediately plug into a Starlink dish and was built using components that could be easily purchased for around $25, according to the magazine.

According to Wouters, the tool would allow hackers to execute code on Starlink devices and gain access to both the entire network and previously unreachable areas of the system. The researcher has opened the blueprints for his modchip for public viewing on GitHub.
Wouters carried out the hack as part of a program run by SpaceX that rewards researchers for detecting flaws in the Starlink service. On Wednesday, SpaceX praised Wouters for the discovery and said it had released a software update.
However, Wouters told Wired that unless SpaceX develops a new model of the terminal’s central processor, Starlink will remain susceptible to hacking. A Starlink hack can easily become a global security issue. After Russia allegedly breached the country’s longtime satellite provider, the Ukrainian military began using Starlink terminals earlier this year. The US Air Force declared on Monday that Starlink would be used.
More than 400,000 users worldwide are currently subscribed to Starlink. The Federal Communications Commission has granted the company permission to broadcast its service to moving cars, ships and planes.
In lower Earth orbit, the company operates a network of more than 2,500 satellites. Customers in remote locations will be able to get high-speed Internet of up to 200 Mbps through the service.
