This crocodile’s eyes were certainly bigger than its stomach.
A thrilling video captures the moment an elephant thwarted a hungry crocodile by swinging the reptile by its tail.
The colossal animal was wading in the shallows of the Luangwa River in western Zambia when the crocodile became hooked.
The elephant frantically ran for land, but stopped short of shore when it realized the crocodile was not going to give up a potential meal so easily.
It circled numerous times, alternating direction every few seconds, while earnestly wagging its tail.
The elephant finally frees the hungry crocodile with one last flick of its tail before nonchalantly storming onto dry land, leaving the reptile to scuttle back under the murky water.
A lucky group of safari guides passed the river just in time to witness the drama unfold.
“It was one of those days where we would come back to camp from home on our days off. Just a normal trip, or so we thought. We didn’t know we were about to witness a once-in-a-lifetime event,” safari guide Emmanuel Sauti, 53, who filmed the encounter, told LatestSightings.com.

Sauti said he couldn’t help but feel nervous about the crocodile, who clearly messed with too big a target.
According to the Australian Northern Territory government, wild crocodiles tend to feed on smaller prey such as antelope, lizards, small frogs and fish.
“I was absolutely excited to witness something so rare. And boy, was it something to see! The elephant was putting up a good fight and the crocodile was not backing down either,” Sauti recalled.
“I have to say that this was one of the most exciting moments of my career as a safari guide. And the fact that it was the first time I had seen an elephant fight a crocodile made it even more special.”

Sauti said it will be his favorite wildlife sighting he has witnessed at work.
“It’s not every day you get to witness something like an elephant fighting a crocodile. These sightings are rare and precious, and it’s moments like these that make me feel grateful for the job I have.”
