Fees fiasco: Restaurant sparks anger for charging ‘bad parenting fee’ amid concerns over child behavior

A Georgia restaurant recently went viral after a customer posted a snapshot of its menu on Reddit. There were the expected classics (food, fountain drinks, and a WI-FI code), but there was also a line that most hadn’t seen on a menu before.

What was the tax about?

The menu appears to alert customers to an “adult surcharge” for “adults who cannot be parents,” implying that parents with problematic children will see an additional tax on their bill. (However, the exact amount of the fee is uncertain because it is not listed on the menu.)

Why did it go viral on the Internet?

Unsurprisingly, news of the alleged cost spread quickly online, with hundreds of people expressing outrage at the prospect of a waiter or owner assessing whether someone’s child is behaving badly enough to justify a price of “bad boy”. “If I read this in a restaurant, I’d probably leave,” added Reddit user u/TheBigTree91.

How do people react on the Internet?

While many of us may sneer behind our screens, some people who dined at the restaurant have described their experience.

“The owner came out and told me he was adding $50 to my bill because of my kids’ behavior,” reviewer u/PowerUpPump recalled. “My kids watched a tablet until the food arrived, they ate and my wife took them outside while I waited and paid the bill.”

“If you have kids, avoid this place at all costs,” said another.

“Holy crap, the most disrespectful owner made a big deal in front of the entire restaurant because our kids were ‘running around the restaurant’. They were near the river. We were informed that we should “go to Burger King and Walmart” and that we were parents “terrible. There is a $50 premium for ‘bad kids’. We were a group of 21 and our waiter was amazing and overly friendly. We will never go back because of this terrible business practice.”
