In the rental world, landlords sometimes seem to have an uncanny talent for inventing new rates to squeeze extra money out of tenants. One of those fees that often draws attention is the “pet fee.”
While it is understandable that tenants have potentially destructive pets, such as aggressive dogs or cats, that could damage the property, some cases take this fee to absurd extremes, bordering on the comical.
An upset tenant is speaking out against her landlord’s attempt to charge her a hefty “pet fee” for a goldfish in a tank. She is not happy with this unexpected charge.
“Tell me why my damn apartment complex tried to charge me $250 for a fish as a pet fee?” North Carolina renter Avianna Brown posted a trending video on TikTok.
In the video, he shared screenshots of text messages from his apartment complex’s leasing office.
They asked him to fill out a “pet application” and pay a $250 money order for his pet goldfish. The video received more than 236,900 views. Brown is a mother of one.
Single mother Avianna Brown was taken aback by the request.
She admitted to ignoring the demand because she didn’t see her goldfish as a normal pet. Goldfish are usually small, live in fish tanks, and do not make noise or cause damage like dogs or cats.
However, she became really frustrated when her landlord sent her a “due” notice for her October rent, claiming she hadn’t paid. She insisted that she had already paid for September and refused to pay the additional $250 for the goldfish.

Avianna Brown shared her text messages with the apartment complex owners on social media.
The owners were adamant in their demand for a costly pet fee, even though the goldfish lived on a table in a small 2.5-gallon tank.
“Am I tripping or what?” a bewildered Brown asked her audience, who eagerly shared their thoughts on this seemingly questionable tactic.
“This is a robbery,” wrote one user.
“[The landlord] better go straight to [hell]”said another. “The fish would be sitting in their office because they have lost their minds,” said one angry commenter.
“Tell them you flushed it and waive the fee,” he said. “Tell them that your fish is your emotional support animal; legally, they have to allow it for free,” another suggested.
Avianna Brown has not shared what she will do about the pet fee issue.
But she’s not the only one facing strange demands from landlords. In February, a woman from Kansas City, Missouri, went viral on TikTok because she was charged $200 upfront and $15 monthly for her pet goldfish.
In August, New York City was ranked one of the “worst” cities for pet owners due to the high fees landlords impose on tenants with pets.
