Five US servicemen killed in training “accident” in the Mediterranean Sea

Five U.S. military service members died after their plane crashed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea during a training mission Friday night, officials said Sunday.

The ship sank during a “routine mid-air refueling mission,” killing everyone on board, according to U.S. European Command.

“Search and rescue efforts began immediately, including nearby U.S. military aircraft and ships,” the officials said, adding that there were no signs of any hostile activity involved.

It was not immediately clear which branch of the military the aircraft belonged to and the names of the victims were being withheld pending notification of families.

The Air Force had sent additional squadrons to the area, where the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford had also been deployed last month to “deter any actor attempting to escalate the situation or expand” Israel’s war in Gaza.
