Florida declares a state of emergency as forecasters predict the tropical disturbance has a high chance of becoming a major storm within 48 hours

A tropical disturbance in the northwestern Caribbean Sea and southern Gulf of Mexico is under increased scrutiny as forecasters have named it Invest 93L, giving it high potential for development and prompting a state of emergency declaration in Florida.

The National Hurricane Center has been tracking the disturbance for a few days. The investment designation means the agency has stepped up monitoring of its system, which appears to be headed for the Gulf of Mexico.

The NHC gives a 90% chance of a tropical depression or tropical storm forming within 48 hours.

While it’s too soon to know for sure where Invest 93L is headed, emergency officials in Florida said they are keeping a close eye on the system. It will be called Idalia if it becomes a tropical storm or hurricane.

“Futuretrack also shows that while it may get stronger, it’s still unclear where in the US this system might affect. So we’ll be watching the Sunshine State and the entire Gulf Coast very closely for the next few days,” said FOX Weather Meteorologist Kiyana Lewis. “Whether we see that in Florida or not, heavy rain with the possibility of flooding will certainly be on the table until early next week.”

Here’s a closer look at Invest 93L.

Where is Invest 93L headed?

It is too soon to know for sure where Invest 93L is headed. Some computer models indicate that it will make landfall in Florida, but the forecast will become clearer in the coming days. Now is a good time for everyone on the Gulf Coast to review their hurricane preparedness plan.

“Once this gets going and fully plays out, we could see this impact across the Gulf Coast, the United States, and possibly the Sunshine State, in a matter of days,” Lewis said. “It really wouldn’t take very long, about 2 to 4 days, to see this impact in parts of Florida.”

Floridians urged to prepare

Emergency managers in Florida said they are closely monitoring the system.

“Our biggest concern right now is the issue of flooding on the (Florida) peninsula,” Kevin Guthrie, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, told FOX Weather on Friday.

Guthrie expressed concern about the possibility of a low-level Category 1 tropical storm or hurricane making landfall in the Nature Coast or Big Bend area, just north of Tampa Bay.

“The Gulf of Mexico is very, very warm right now. So we don’t know exactly what we’re going to be up against,” he added. “But we will prepare for the next three days, over the weekend, as if we were going to receive a Category 1 hurricane and we will make those preparations, asking people to listen to their local emergency managers.”

The threat of tropical development has prompted Governor Ron DeSantis to urge Floridians to prepare for any impact and has issued a state of emergency for half of Florida’s 67 counties.

Bottom line

The Invest 93L appears destined to move into the Gulf of Mexico, but its future strength and whether it will make landfall are still uncertain. Everyone on the Gulf Coast should review their hurricane preparedness plan and be prepared to take action if necessary.
