Footage captures car leaving Virginia Beach pier as police fight to recover vehicle

A vehicle skidded off a Virginia Beach fishing pier and plunged into the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday, and the stunning moment was caught on camera, with officials still not recovering the car more than 24 hours later.

Footage captured by a passerby early Saturday morning showed the vehicle traveling straight from the start of the dock until it plummeted off the edge and into the water. The car’s brake lights flashed sporadically before the shocking descent.

Authorities responded quickly, but have not been able to reach the car. 12onyourside The car left straight off the Virginia Beach pier early Saturday morning. Kaylynn Crawford

“Is he going to drive to the limit?” said a surprised girl while the video was being filmed.

“No way,” the girl said just as the car hit the ocean. “Friend no”.

Authorities said Sunday night that they do not know who or how many occupants were inside the car when it fell into the water.

The effort to reach the car, which police say is at the bottom of the ocean, has been suspended for now due to dangerous ocean conditions.

Virginia Beach police said in a news release around 1 p.m. that a salvage barge and professional salvage divers from a private company attempted to recover the car, but “adverse” conditions in the water scrapped that plan.

When police received a call around 7 a.m. Saturday that the car had fallen into the water, dangerous conditions also prevented divers from jumping into the water, police said. But sonar was later able to locate where the car was located.

“At this time, the exact number or identity of the occupants is unknown,” Virginia Beach police said. “The goal of this mission is to safely recover the vehicle, reunite all occupants with their loved ones, and maintain the integrity of all evidence.”

The girl who recorded the wild footage, Kaylynn Crawford, 16, told the Virginian-Pilot that she and a friend were running along the boardwalk when they heard a crash while taking a break.

“Once they accelerated, I thought, ‘Oh no, it’s going to go off the dock,’” he allegedly said.

The car crashed into a gate that blocked the entrance to the pier during the off-season, the newspaper reported, citing officials and locals.

A worker whose shop is near the dock couldn’t believe it.

“My first reaction was that I felt very surprised and then very sad,” Manan Scholl told WTKR.

It is unclear when the recovery process will resume.

“We would also like to express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” police said. “VBPD is working diligently to bring the situation closer to your loved ones through our investigation and recovery process.”
