Former ‘Today Girl’ Robbin Bain dies at 87

Robbin Bain, who covered fashion and beauty as a “Today Girl” on NBC’s morning show, died Oct. 21 in Southampton, New York. She was 87 years old.

Bain’s daughter, Lara McLanahan, told Deadline that breast cancer was the cause of her death.

Born on August 10, 1936, Barbara Jane Bain’s career began in 1959 when the Queens native was crowned Miss Rheingold, which was the most popular beer in the region at the time.

Upon winning the $50,000 prize, Bain made several appearances in the United States and Europe and was even cast in advertisements for Revlon and Helena Rubinstein.

“It wasn’t a body issue,” Bain told The New York Daily News in 2000, according to The New York Times.

In 1961, Bain joined “Today,” where she talked about fashion, makeup and other women’s topics.

“Personality and integrity were very important. You had to seem very approachable to kids sitting at the bar or going to the grocery store,” Bain added.

She also gained fame as one of the four “Portrettes” who hosted Jackie Gleason on her variety show, “The Jackie Gleason Show.”

In 1961, Bain joined “Today,” where she talked about fashion, makeup and other women’s topics.

Barbara Walters, who died last year at age 93, became a “Today Girl” after joining the show in 1961 as a writer and researcher.

In “Audition: A Memoir,” she said it’s “Neanderthal” for women to get stuck covering only “female-targeted features.”

Bain, who worked the position for only 2 months before leaving due to pregnancy, had a higher opinion of the position.

“I was the only woman, with the exception of the makeup artist, on set,” Bain recalled during an on-air “Today Girls” reunion in 2012.

After leaving “Today,” Bain became an interior designer.

McLanahan is survived by her daughter Dina Nemeth, her husband, Alexander Guadieri, her stepson Alexandre Guadieri and six grandchildren.
