Franz began his television career as a full-time actor in 1968 and later as a director. Between 1980 and 2000, Franz worked as a scriptwriter for several television shows and miniseries. With the best “Agter Elke Man (Behind Each Man)”, Franz modified the soap opera formula for the South African public, which dominated television for four long years, between 1985-1988. From 1992 to 2010, Franz made “Egoli: Plek van goud” (Egoli: Place of God), which aired for 19 seasons and ran for more than 11 years. Franz’s first film was “Fighter Pilots” (Wing Commander) in 1974, nicknamed to Africans as Seuns van die Wolke (“Sons of the Clouds”), while he wrote the screenplays for Freddie’s in Love and Ma Skryf Matriek (” Mother Writes Matric”). He made 18 films with various critical and financial successes. As a professional actor, Franz appeared in ‘Die Tas’ in 1965, ‘Die Onwillige Weduwee’ in 1965, ‘Die Pluimsaad Waai Ver’ in 1966 and many more.
In 1980, Franz made his career in television, writing scripts for more than 13 television series, 7 individual dramas and two miniseries between 1980 and 2000. Franz made his first television debut in a family series ‘Skooldae’ (School Days), and later in ‘Familiedae’ (Family Day), along with ‘Kampus’ (Campus). Franz received the Best African Actor award at the DARLO Awards for the role he played in Saterdad, Sondag and Maandag.

After testing positive for Covid-19, Franz was admitted to the hospital where he lost the battle against the coronavirus and died due to its complications. Fanz Marx married Hildegard Marx and has a son and a daughter. Franz had a brother named Johan Marx.
